  30 The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) campaign is modelled on the sanctions campaign against South African apartheid in the 1980s, and was officially launched in 2005 by a plethora of groups representing Palestinian civic society, collectively known as the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Campaign National Committee (BNC). These groups represent a range of people from teachers to farmers, political parties to trade unions, refugees to students, as well as associations and campaigns. The BDS campaign urges non-violent punitive measures to be brought against Israel until the military occupation ends, colonised land is returned, and Israel dismantles the Barrier.
